USAID: Critical Minerals Reference Sheets
Concise introduction to common issues and opportunities for responsible mining
Client: USAID
During my time supporting USAID as a communications director for two programs, our teams produced something more valuable than gold: knowledge.
We convened some of the leading experts in the world on a range of subjects to capture best practices, evidence, and actionable insights on ways to address countless environmental and social issues.
One of my favorite projects on the Integrated Natural Resource Management program (INRM) was working with the Land and Resource Governance division to produce a series of short, practical resources about critical minerals.
Critical minerals such as lithium, cobalt, and rare earths are essential to the modern economy and national security. Renewable energy, smartphones, and military technology rely on these minerals.
Many of USAID’s partner countries around the world possess an abundance of these minerals. Mining almost always comes with some environmental or social impacts on the ecosystems and communities where minerals exist. However, there are many ways to reduce the harms of mining.
These two resources provide a concise overview of some of the specific issues that can arise in mining — and point to some known solutions to mitigate those issues. These short resources, along with USAID’s more comprehensive report on critical minerals, provide a good foundation to promote responsible mining.
